REFLECTION
My tutor led us on a visual tour of Favelas, Rio de Janeiro, by showing us two videos and slides about the story of the neighborhood. We have discovered the importance of the built environment from these videos.
The FAVELAS of RIO
Favelas were constructed in order to meet the needs of the residents. Without proper knowledge of the built environment, the arrangement of the building from the top view is messy and unorganized.
Problems
The most serious problem is the sanitation problem. The sewage system is inefficient, resulting in poor ventilation in the surrounding area. Health issues are impacted. This could have resulted in a disease outbreak. Furthermore, the numerous unconnected pipes and electrical wires endanger the lives of those who enter into the water at any time. All of this was caused by a lack of understanding of the built environment.
Safety
A few favelas are still controlled by drug cartels. Although the pacification of favelas is effective for the first few years, the police are unable to drive gangs out of all of them. The government should stop ignoring the problems that the residents of the favelas face. They must eliminate the gang immediately in order to provide a better future for the residents.
Favelas Resident
Despite the government's neglect of the favelas, residents are thriving by implementing a variety of changes aimed at changing the public's view of favelas. They are resourceful, creative, and calm. They are able to thrive in this challenging environment and make their lives more interesting. If the favelas do not have them, the only option is for them to remain the darkest cities, teeming with drug gangs. If you make a change, everything is beautiful.
Conclusion
If favela builders have a deep understanding of the built environment as well as the government's concerns, favelas will be better organised, and residents' living conditions will improve. All of the problems can be solved with proper planning, such as widening the street and adding more public space for social interactions with friends, family, the community, and nature. People's enjoyment of life is fundamentally influenced by the places and spaces they inhabit, so getting it right should be a top priority for them.
